Biography
Posters, stage sets, packaging, trademarks, book jackets, toys, posters, tapestries, exhibition design. Born 21 June 1894 in Berlin. 1913: studied at the Kunstschule, Berlin. 1914-19: military service mainly in Russia. 1920s: lived and freelanced in Lübeck; designed advertising material for the town administration. 1921: designed Lübeck emergency money (Notgeld). Designed posters for Hamburg-America Line. 1926-7: set designs for Breslau Staatsoper. 1933/4: designed exhibition ‘Deutsche Buchkunst’. 1930s: designed charming wooden toys and illustrations, for instance Spielzug, published by L. Staackmann, 1938. 1937: designed decorative tapestries for the Reich Air Ministry. January 1945: in German territorial army (Volkssturm); then interned in Russian prisoner-of-war camp. 1945-59: taught at the Hamburg Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste (director from 1956). 1963: Edwin Scharff Prize, Hamburg; Honorary Medal der Freien Akademie der Künste. Died 22 January 1967 in Hamburg.
