Biography
Designer, writer. Born 12 February 1890 in Hamburg. German and language studies in Munich, Berlin and Kiel. From c1933: wrote articles for the journal Exlibris. July 1936: his work appeared in the British journal Art and Industry, p. 130. From c1936-9: wrote reviews of exhibitions held at the Schriftmuseum Rudolf Blanckertz, Berlin, and for its quarterly journal Die zeitgemässe Schrift. 1939: wrote ‘London Letter’ for the journal Philobiblon. 1937-44, 1950-69: Editor of the journal of advertising art Gebrauchsgraphik (succeeding the founder, H.K. Frenzel) during which time he wrote articles – often very brief introductions – on a great variety of topics. From 1948: President of BDG (Bundes deutscher Gebrauchsgraphiker). 1948-9: organised the Advertising Congress ‘Zeitungsanzeigen des Auslandes’. 1949: moved to Munich to be Registrar (Kurator) of the Meisterschule für Deutschlands Buchdrucker. 1951: organised and designed the exhibition Kunst und Werbung, Munich. Frequent member of design juries. Member of art advisory council for the town of Darmstadt and for the German Post Office. Died August 1969.
