Biography

Posters, currency, set designs. Born 22 June 1889 in Rostock. 1912-?: studied at the Berlin Akademie der Künste; he then had a studio in Rostock. c1920: founder of Vereinigung Rostocker Künstler. Designed Rostock Notgeld currency during inflation period, 1920-22. Worked for the Berlin publisher Safari und Vohwinkel and designed the occasional set design. Died 5 February 1948 in Rostock.

Publicity, book design, calligraphy, type designs, trade marks . Born 1 September 1911 in See, Kreis Rothenburg. 1931-2: studied in Leipzig under Fred Gravenhorst . 1932: emigrated to Liberec, Czechoslovakia (to which numerous antifascists and Jewish artists had emigrated). 1935-7: attended art school in Liberec. Freelance work. 1939-40: studied at Leipzig Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe. 1940?-45?: military service. From 1945: designed bookbindings and jackets, and developed type designs for Horst Erich Wolter of VEB Typoart: one design was Tschörtner -Antiqua. Clients included City of Leipzig and Gewandhaus orchestra. 1973: awarded Gutenberg Prize and numerous medals at Leipzig international book exhibitions. During his career he designed over 500 books; his publishing clients included Insel, Neumann.
