Biography
Born 5 August 1898 in Leipzig. Studied at the Leipzig Akademie für Graphik, and at the Berlin Akademie. 1929: worked with Käthe Kollwitz in the printmaking studio of the Berlin Akademie der Künste. 1931: awarded the Art Prize, City of Berlin. 1933: awarded Dürer Prize. 1934-5: scholarship to study in Rome. 1937: gold and silver medals, Paris World’s Fair. 1940: medal for printmaking, Madrid exhibition. 1941: Art Prize, City of Berlin. 1946-58: taught at the Hochschule für Graphik, Leipzig, and also (1952-8) at Leipzig University. Died 8 November 1977 in Leipzig.
