Biography
Book design, jackets, bindings, trademarks, lettering. Born 26 August 1906 in Memel. Apprenticed as compositor in Memel. 1925-9: studied at the Leipzig Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe: teachers included Walter Tiemann, Hermann Delitsch, Georg Alexander Mathéy. 1927-9: worked as compositor with Carl Ernst Poeschel at Poeschel & Trepte, Leipzig. 1930-40: director of composing room at the printer Offizin Haag-Drugulin (later VEB Offizin Andersen Nexö, then Martin Anderson Nexö, today Haag-Drugulin), Leipzig, working closely with Ernst Kellner. 1937: awarded Prix d’Honneur at Paris World Exhibition for Drugulins Schatzkästlein, a book he designed. Jan. 1948: returned from imprisonment in a French prisoner-of-war camp to a destroyed Haag-Drugulin. From 1949: typographic and art director of VEB Offizin Andersen Nexö, and teacher at the Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe. 1959: awarded the first Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig; awarded gold medal. International Book Exh., Leipzig. 1964: jury member, Typomundus 20. From c1964-80: designer of the bibliographical journal Marginalien. 1980: conceived the idea of asking 45 internationally-know book designers to design and supply proof pages of the Liber Librorum from the Royal Library, Stockholm. Died 14 February 1984 in Leipzig.
