Biography
Painter, interior designer, posters, book artist. Born Johannes Joseph Vincenz Cissarz 22 January 1873 in Danzig. 1891-4: studied at the Dresden Akademie für bildenden Künste. 1895-6: studied at the Dresden Akademie under Pohle and Freye, then Meisterschüler of Ferdinand W. Pauwels. 1897: freelanced in Dresden; worked for publishers, notably Eugen Diederichs, and the Dresden Werkstätten für Handwerkskunst for which he designed furniture from 1898. 1903-6: designed books and posters for the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. 1903-4: designed exhibition areas for the 1904 St Louis (USA) World’s Fair, and designed interiors for German villas. From 1906: taught book design at the Lehr- und Versuchswerkstätten (teaching and experimental workshops), Stuttgart. 1913: designed the typeface Cissarz-Latein, issued by Ludwig & Mayer, Frankfurt a.M. From 1913: taught in the department for graphic art and book design; designed book jackets until 1924 for Callwey, Cotta, Diederichs, Ullstein, and others. 1916: director of the master-class for painters at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Frankfurt a.M. In 1927 Cissarz was teaching at the Hochschule für freie und angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt. 1937: an early sympathizer and NSDAP Party member, he was awarded a medal by Hitler for his participation in work on Olympic Village, Berlin. 1939: received award from the city of Frankfurt a.M. for his service to the art school. Died 23 (or 22) December 1942 in Frankfurt a.M.
