Biography
Lettering, illustration, books, type designs, woodcuts. Born 29 March 1899 in Ebersbach/Lausitz. 1917-18: military service ; wounded 1918. 1920-24: studied at the Leipzig Akademie für Graphische Künste. 1924-8: studied at the Dresden Kunstgewerbeschule (where one of his teachers was Drescher), finally at the Dresden Academy. After travelling throughout Europe he settled in Dresden where he produced posters, stained-glass windows, book illustrations and murals. 1930: awarded Art Prize of the City of Dresden. 1931-45: taught at the Dresden Kunstgewerbeschule. From 1937: head of the section of technical graphics of the Dresden Kunstgewerbeschule. From 1940: also taught at the Dresden Akademie. From 1944: military service. 1945: his studio destroyed in an air raid. 1955: moved to West Germany. 1955-64: taught at the Stuttgart Meisterschule für Malerei. 1976: awarded Ring of Honour (Goldenen Ehrenring) of the Deutsches Kulturwerk Europäischen Geistes. Died 15 July 1981 in Bad Tölz.
