Biography
Illustrations, book jackets. Born 11 December 1886 in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland). 1904-7: trained at Breslau art school. 1907-9: trained as painter/artist at the Munich Akademie der bildenden Künste. 1909: freelance artist, working eventually for Kladderadatsch, Simplicissimus, Westermanns Monatshefte, Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung. From 1913 he became one of the best-known newspaper illustrators. 1915: pacifist. [ translate and summarize Illustration 63, Nov. 1988, pp. 77-9. ] Jewish wife. His antiwar graphic work was published in 1924 with that of other pacifists such as Käthe Kollwitz and George Grosz. From 1933: his work was forbidden to be shown . 1945: wounded by a Russian guard while interned in a prisoner-of-war camp. (DBE, 1997) Died 11 September 1945 in Dresden.
