Biography
Born 23 March 1893 in Schwann/Württemberg (now Straubenhardt/Schwarzwald). 1908-12: studied at the Strassburg Kunstgewerbeschule. 1912-15: studied at the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin: a teacher was Emil Orlik. After military service he returned to Berlin. By 1924: member of the ‘left’ Die Abstrakten group of artists (from 1932: ‘Die Zeitgemässen’). 1928: helped form ‘ASSO’ (Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler Deutschlands). 1933: work and exhibitions forbidden by Nazis. 1945-51: taught at the Hochschule für bildende Künste, Berlin-Charlottenburg. 1947-9: co-publisher, with Carl Hofer, of the East German art journal bildende kunst (not capitalised; the capitalised Bildende Kunst appeared from 1953), and frequent contributor. 1955-8: taught at the Hochschule für bildende und angewandte Kunst, Weissensee. 1966: awarded Goethe Prize. Died 25 August 1969 in East Berlin.
